Building Sustainable Pavements: Investigating the Effectiveness of Recycled Tire Rubber as a Modifier in Asphalt Mixtures

Building more sustainable pavements for the future requires knowledge of alternative and innovative materials utilization in road construction maintenance activities. Being mindful this need, present study investigates a Reacted Activated Rubber (RAR) compound modifier with aim defining an optimal RAR percentage Asphalt Concrete (AC) mixes. It is acknowledged that when type incorporated within AC mix as bituminous binder material, associated economic, environmental social benefits are significant. Simply put, use modifiers provides potential to utilize waste product (rubber tires) bitumen mixtures. However, it seems information about overall performance mixes modified currently limited. On these grounds, focuses on surface course layer evaluates (a) achieved physical characteristics (compaction degree/voids), (b) mechanical characterization results (stiffness moduli) (c) friction-based properties tested mixtures incorporating varying levels different test temperatures. From evaluation, concluded case mixture under investigation, by weight inclusion 10%.
